About TEE and ITEEN | Print |

ITEEN is an organisation who runs TEE courses trought Nepal and diospora. Most of ITEEN's courses are translation of SEAN International's English courses. here are some explanation:

What is 'TEE'?

‘TEE’, which stands for Theological Education by Extension, is an effective but low cost system of learning and training within the local context, modelled on small groups led by trained tutors – compared, for instance, with the expensive and non-localised option of college courses.

SEAN's TEE materials are directed for use at 'grass roots' level - that is Christians in the local church, or 'every-member ministry' - to equip all God's people to be effective ambassadors for Jesus, society-changers, missionaries in the world outside the church, in the neighbourhood and in the all-important world of work.

TEE programmes aim to provide, from the scriptures and guided by the Holy Spirit, the tools, materials and structures needed for realistic in-service training of members and leaders of local congregations. Through this they grow and mature in their faith as well as discover and develop their gifts; thus they are able to exercise a more effective ministry, and the Lord is glorified - both in the church and in the world.

What is 'SEAN'?

'SEAN' stands for Study by Extension for All Nations. SEAN’S TEE materials are designed to enable and mobilise God’s people for growth and ministry in evangelism, ongoing discipleship, ministry training, multiplying Christian workers, preparing leaders and pastors, every-member ministry, and church planting.

The methodology of SEAN's materials is based on well established educational techniques, although these are rarely used in the context of Christian discipleship and learning in the small group setting - this partly what gives SEAN its distinctiveness and which certainly makes it so effective. Beyond being able to read and write, there is no intellectual exclusion. Yet the simple method of learning should not hide the fact that the truths learned are deep.

SEAN materials have been used around the world since the early 1970s. They are currently used in well over hundred countries and have been variously translated into over 70 languages. One can only 'guestimate' the number of SEAN students world wide - but 200,000 to 300,000 at any one time would probably be somewhere near the mark.

SEAN courses operate at their best within a local programme. These need to be set up with care. Tutors need to be 1) envisioned, and 2) trained. It is nearly always the case that, in areas where SEAN has fallen into disuse, the envisioning and training of tutors has not been properly addressed. P

SEAN International is an authoring body. By and large it encourages individual countries, under licence, to contextualise and produce their own versions of SEAN courses. ITEEN is licensed producer of SEAN Courses .

The debt of appreciation owed to SEAN by countless thousands of students is immense. God's word given to us through the Bible is life-changing, and SEAN's ministry lies in helping ordinary Christians to unwrap those truths. For both young Christians and those more mature but without any structured training, SEAN courses cannot be ignored.

Methodology

The written home study, although of great value in itself, has clear educational goals and ensures that everyone coming to the group meeting is essentially at the same point of understanding. The home study is, as it were, the springboard for the group meeting. (Leaders: how much time in Bible study meetings have you spent before ‘finally’ reaching the point of the study, and then having to admit lamely that ‘we haven’t time to...’ at the very point that the discussion starts to become valuable?)

Newcomers to SEAN materials, and especially those who happen to pick up a home study book without any other explanation, all too often conclude that the material is beneath their intellectual level - to make this instant judgement is both erroneous and short-sighted, to say nothing about the degree of arrogance displayed!

In essence, deep truths are learned through a method which is neither threatening nor tedious. Whether gardener or graduate, tea-lady or teacher, you will enjoy its gently approach which speaks as strongly to the heart as to the head - therein lies the secret of this material. SEAN makes no claims of originality in using a well proven method of learning, but its application within the context of Christian discipleship in the small group setting gives it its explosive potential. All this, of course, precedes the...

Group Meeting

The group meeting takes, as its starting point, what has already been learned in the home study, and explores it further through discussion in the familiar small group setting. Moreover, the group leader is provided with structured guidance making both the preparation and the meeting itself more effective than it so often is if we rely on our own resources.

It is essential that the group leader who has not experienced the dynamics of SEAN groups follows the structured guidance given.

Practical Application

The ministry (or practical) assignment seeks to apply what has been learned, and to bear fruit. As in so many learning experiences, it is the final ‘doing’ that cements together the whole process of any life-changing education. In several courses, the group leader’s material offers the group leader guidance for practical assignments while at the same time leaving room for applications that may be better suited to local conditions etc.

And, of course, all the courses aim to produce fruit in the student, regardless of whether or not actual suggestions are built into individual courses.
